From Mithila’s Ponds to Your Kitchen: Discover the Journey of Our Makhana
Makhana has a close connection with Mithila’s food traditions. It finds a place in sweet dishes, savoury cooking and everyday kitchen cupboards. At Mithila Maai, we want to share that familiar ingredient in forms that fit the way you cook and eat.
Where makhana begins
Makhana comes from an aquatic plant. The white pieces found in a packet are the popped kernels of its seeds; they do not grow in that fluffy form.
Harvesting and collecting the seeds is only the beginning. The journey from water to kitchen also involves cleaning, drying and processing before the familiar popped makhana is ready.

The skill behind the puff
Producing popped makhana involves heating and popping the seeds. Traditional processing requires careful timing and skilled handling, while machinery is also used in the sector.
This explains an important distinction: plain makhana has already undergone the processing needed to turn the seed into a puff. “Plain” means it has no added seasoning; it does not mean an untouched seed straight from the pond.
The roasting you do at home is a separate step to develop the crunch and flavour you enjoy.
Find your everyday favourite
Mithila Maai offers three makhana options for different kitchen needs.
Premium Makhana — Jumbo Size
Our larger-size option for those who prefer bigger pieces. Enjoy preparing it with your favourite seasoning or using it in dishes where you want whole makhana.
Everyday Makhana
A plain, versatile option for regular use. Keep it ready for a homemade snack, a savoury dish or a sweet preparation.
Makhana Powder
An alternative to whole pieces for recipes such as kheer and shakes. Follow the pack’s preparation directions and adjust the amount to suit the texture you want.
All three are available in 250g packs. Check the product page for the current price and details.
Make it your own
For a simple snack, gently roast plain makhana in a pan over a low flame, stirring regularly. Add a little ghee and your preferred seasoning if you like. Let it cool slightly before serving.
You can also use whole makhana in kheer or add it to a curry, allowing it to take on the flavours of the dish.
Start with familiar ingredients and season to your taste. Some days, a little salt is enough. On others, you might prefer cumin, black pepper or a touch of chilli.
Keep it ready for the next recipe
Follow the pack’s storage instructions and seal it properly after opening. Use a dry container if you transfer the contents, and keep moisture away.
A familiar ingredient, a story worth knowing
Understanding how makhana is produced helps us appreciate the work behind an everyday food. From cultivation and seed collection to processing and packing, several stages contribute to the ingredient that reaches our kitchens.
